The Visitation

This is a detail from The Fifteen Mysteries and the Virgin of the Rosary. Elizabeth half-kneels before Mary and places her hand on the Virgin's belly to represent the words from scripture, "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" (Luke 1:42-43).

As usual, Mary is dressed in blue. The kneeling and the Franciscan-style belt are unusual features among Visitation portraits.
